Joseph A. Boni
Consultant

Joseph A. Boni has been in the Engineering and Facility Management Industry for eighteen years beginning as an apprentice engineer at a high rise building in downtown Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Boni completed all required training classes and passed the City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License Exam in 1992. In 1996, Boni graduated with honors from Triton College with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences majoring in Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Shortly after graduation Mr. Boni transferred to another Chicago high rise building as a Shift Engineer and took part in the commissioning of a 1.2 million square foot high rise building. In addition to his normal operational duties, Mr. Boni helped design and implement a blue print archive vault. He managed the design, implementation and administration of the preventative maintenance program for three departments, including Engineering. Boni was also a liaison to the Chicago Fire Department.

In 1998, Joseph was hired as an engineer at the Crossings of Oak Brook in Illinois. Mr. Boni was promoted to the position of Chief Engineer eight months later. He was a part of the National Safety Management Team and then served as Regional Engineering Director for the Chicago Market. Mr. Boni completed his Facilities Management Administrator (FMA) designation in February of 2002 and was invited to participate in the Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI) International Instructor Development course in June. Since that point he has been a reviewer of textbooks for BOMI International and was the group leader for the Midwest Region. Mr. Boni was an Instructor at Power Engineers Institute of Technology (PEIT).

In July of 2002, Mr. Boni was hired as the Chief Engineer of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra facility. He was promoted to Facilities Manager in 2004. This facility is a complex of three separate buildings interconnected by a concert hall. The facility totals 350,000 square feet of space and supports a demanding event schedule. Mr. Boni has held a Class A-City of Chicago General Contractor’s license and was responsible for the management of all projects of the Symphony Center. In February of 2005, Joseph was promoted to Director of Facilities.

In October of 2005, Boni was hired as the Director of Engineering for University of Phoenix Stadium (formerly Cardinals Stadium) in Glendale, Arizona. His initial responsibilities included the verification and commissioning of all mechanical systems at the stadium. This included North America’s first movable 19 million pound natural grass field tray and retractable arched roof. Boni was also tasked with the design and implementation of the engineering department organization. This task included such activities as building an engineering team from the ground up, writing department philosophies, and building the policies and procedures guide.

When the 1.9 million square foot University of Phoenix Stadium opened to the public in August of 2006, it hosted a record 30 events in 30 days, which included an inaugural weekend of 150,000 attendees. Mr. Boni was in charge of all trade utility and engineering arrangements.
The facility hosted 182 events and 231 event days in its first year. Only 12 of those events were actually football games.

Mr. Boni’s main responsibilities at the stadium included overseeing operational activities of facility staff comprised of four trades and 14 employees. He implemented and managed the energy efficiency program for the stadium. Mr. Boni also developed and administered the preventive maintenance program for building systems and the structure itself. He prepared and managed a $5.2 million operating and a $1.6 million capital budget. Mr. Boni also administered contracts with utility companies and service contractors, reviewed and approved all departmental expenditures and was responsible for the profit/loss margin of engineering services.

In February of 2008, Boni was tasked with assisting the NFL (National Football League) with the world’s largest event, Super Bowl XLII. Mr. Boni was responsible for coordinating the NFL’s instant replay, the coaches’ headsets and other game aspects. His ability to oversee the stadium’s engineering and construction changes made way for what some would say is the greatest Super Bowl in the history of the game.

Mr. Boni serves in different capacities on many organizations including Board member for the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Greater Phoenix and is the Treasurer of the Association of Retractable Roof Operators Worldwide (ARROW). Mr. Boni serves as an instructor for BOMI International and is a member of the board of Trustees.

Boni’s strengths include the ability to analyze building operations, construction and development. His past experience has helped him streamline operations, minimize downtime and optimize his staff of engineers. His strong ability to dissect building systems and optimize facilities operations have made him sought after as a consultant and he is an authority in the field.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Boni graduated Summa Cum Laude in Organizational Management from Aurora University in 2002. He and his wife Diane, reside in Phoenix, Arizona with their son Lucas and daughters Alexis and Giada.
